Teacher of History and Politics

We wish to appoint a Teacher of History and Politics for January 2027. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for History and Politics, a desire to inspire this in others and will be eager to develop their own teaching skills across Year 9, IGCSE, A level, and university preparation. The History and Politics departments at Bedford share a strong academic focus. We have a good record of success in terms of university uptake. A level results are also strong, with a pleasing number of pupils going on to study History, Politics, Law, and other related intellectual humanities subjects beyond Bedford at some of the country’s most competitive universities, including Oxbridge. Each department is also proud of its work supporting boys’ wider academic interests beyond examined courses. The History department seeks to foster a lasting commitment and love of history and a nuanced understanding of humanity’s past and its influence on the present; we aim to make lessons interesting, relevant and enjoyable. The Politics department seeks to encourage a keen interest in current affairs but also values deeper academic extension, wider reading and enrichment activities. Both departments run active Societies, hosting talks, debates and university webinars, and both encourage boys to deliver short presentations and apply for external competitions. All current History teachers (5) teach Politics so, while the departments are led separately, the atmosphere within our teaching space (also shared with Religious Studies) is highly collegiate and collaborative. The appointed teacher will be required from the outset to teach both History and Politics (including US Politics) at A level. The ability to teach Religious Studies may also be welcome. This post could be a role for an early career teacher. The role may also suit a more experienced teacher keen to broaden their experience in a new course or a different school setting.
