About this role
The Modern Languages Department offers three languages (French, German and Spanish) from year 7 to year 13. The faculty comprises twelve staff, most of whom teach more than one language, as well as three language assistants. The Head of MFL leads the team, in addition to heads of each language who are responsible for the delivery of that language and directly line manage the teachers of their subject.
Pupils study all three languages as part of a carousel in year 7, before choosing two to continue in year 8. Many pupils also proceed into year 9 with two modern languages, but there is opportunity at this point to take Latin or Classical Civilisation in place of one of their choices. At GCSE, all pupils opt for at least one modern language or classical subject. Numbers of pupils taking German have increased through the school, and we now have three classes in year 8 instead of one, for example.
A collaborative and forward-thinking department, the German team are committed to teaching lessons that both inspire pupils and place great emphasis on the target language and literacy. Classroom teaching is supplemented with an exciting programme of cultural events, competitions and residential trips.
With 88% of year 11 pupils achieving 9-7 grades in AQA GCSE, and the whole year 13 cohort achieving A*-A grades in AQA A Level in 2025, German is thriving and the department has a strong track record of success.
At least 3 days of German teaching is required, but there is possibility of a full-time position for a candidate who could also teach Spanish and/or French to GCSE level.
