Teacher of English (part-time 0.5)

The English Department has a strong academic tradition and is a thriving part of the school. At present there are two full-time and three part-time teachers. Teamwork is central to the department. We are a close-knit, mutually supportive team who understand that goodwill and humour go a long way and meet regularly to collaborate on the content and delivery of the curriculum. English Literature is a popular choice at A Level, with girls gaining places to read English at Oxford, Cambridge, and other leading universities. OCR is the chosen board for A Level, while we use Edexcel for English Literature GCSE and English Language IGCSE. Wider reading is a priority and supported by our whole-school 40 Book Reading Challenge. A senior Book Club run by the Sixth Form team is very popular; the Fifth and Fourth Form have their own Book Clubs run by English teachers; and we are lucky enough to enjoy an award-winning library in a beautiful setting. The importance of oracy is highlighted by the time given to preparing Fifth Form pupils for the English Language Spoken Endorsement, along with public speaking and debating activities. Presentations are frequently prepared by girls throughout the school to build confidence and expertise, enabling them to both share and consolidate learning. English at St Mary’s involves extra-curricular activities such as theatre and cinema trips, a variety of Enrichment sessions, plays, lectures, competitions and visiting speakers, performers and writers, to extend the students’ horizons and to reflect our lively and interesting subject. The team are looking forward to welcoming a new teacher to share our passion and enthusiasm from September.
