About this role
Payroll Manager
Cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust · Central team · Permanent
We're a growing Catholic Multi-Academy Trust of seven schools, and we're looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to join our central team. This is a standalone role with real ownership — you'll lead our end-to-end payroll and pensions function, making a tangible difference across all our schools.
Working closely with HR and Finance colleagues, you'll ensure accurate and timely payroll for all teaching and support staff, maintain compliance with HMRC and pension scheme requirements, and act as the Trust's expert point of contact for all payroll matters.
What you'll be doing
Leading the monthly payroll process across all schools — new starters, leavers, changes, and statutory payments
Ensuring compliance with PAYE, NIC, RTI, and auto-enrolment obligations
Administering TPS and LGPS pension contributions, enrolments, and queries
Processing pay in line with NJC and national teacher pay frameworks, including increments and cost-of-living awards
Producing payroll reports and staff cost data for senior leaders and budget planning
Acting as first point of contact for payroll queries from headteachers, school business managers, and staff
Maintaining and improving payroll systems and data flows with HR and Finance
What we're looking for
Significant end-to-end payroll experience, ideally in education or the public sector
Thorough knowledge of PAYE, NIC, RTI, and statutory payment rules
Experience with NJC and teacher pay frameworks
Proficiency in payroll software (e.g. iTrent, Earnie, Sage, or equivalent)
CIPP qualification or equivalent experience (desirable)
Exceptional attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and the ability to meet strict deadlines
Sympathy with, and respect for, our Catholic mission and values
