About this role
Our Learning Mentor will provide targeted support for pupils who struggle with focus, attention, and engagement in their learning. Working closely with the Lead Pastoral Care Manager delivering 1:1 and small-group mentoring to help children develop the skills, confidence and resilience they need to succeed.
Key Activities:
Direct pupil support:
Deliver regular 1:1 and small-group mentoring sessions for identified pupils
Support pupils who find it difficult to focus, stay on task, or manage their emotions in class
Use practical strategies to help children develop attention, self-regulation and organisational skills
Provide a safe space for pupils to talk about worries or challenges affecting their learning
Regular check-ins:
Conduct weekly or fortnightly check-ins with your mentees to monitor progress and wellbeing
Build trusting relationships so pupils feel comfortable sharing concerns
Celebrate successes and help pupils set achievable goals
Pastoral interventions:
Deliver structured programmes (e.g., social skills, emotional literacy, resilience-building)
Use restorative approaches to support positive behaviour and relationships
Provide transition support (e.g., moving between year groups, starting new routines)
Family liaison and wellbeing:
Liaise with families to understand pupils' needs and share progress
Conduct wellbeing checks and signpost families to additional support where needed
Work collaboratively with parents/carers to support pupils at home and school
Collaboration and safeguarding:
Work closely with class teachers, SENCo, and the DSL to coordinate support
Maintain accurate records and input data into the school's management system
Report safeguarding concerns promptly and follow school procedures
Participate in multi-agency meetings where appropriate
Monitoring impact:
Track pupils' progress using simple data and observations
Adjust interventions based on what's working
Contribute to reviews and reports on pupil outcome
