About this role
Head of Modern Foreign Languages
Full-Time | Start Date: September 2026 or January 2027
King’s Bruton is an HMC co-educational boarding and day school of 320 pupils aged 13–18.
An inspirational, experienced, and suitably-qualified Head of Modern Foreign Languages is required to lead this vibrant and highly successful department. The successful applicant will be a qualified teacher with a specialist or MFL-related degree, a proven track record of excellent classroom practice, and the vision and organisational skills to lead a busy and successful department.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a passionate linguist to shape and develop the strategic direction of MFL at King’s Bruton, building on an already strong foundation. The successful candidate will be able to teach French to both GCSE and A Level standard; the ability to support the teaching of Spanish at GCSE would be desirable, but is not essential.
At KS4, pupils study an MFL option as part of the core curriculum, and uptake in both French and Spanish is strong. Both French and Spanish are offered in the Sixth Form as A Level options, with pupils progressing to language-related degrees. The department is supported by a rich programme of cultural and academic enrichment, excellent resources, strong pupil outcomes, and a well-established programme of overseas trips.
The Head of Department will be responsible for leading and inspiring a committed team of teachers, driving high standards of teaching and learning, and further enhancing the profile of languages within the school. This role would suit an ambitious and creative teacher with leadership experience, or an exceptional classroom practitioner ready to take the next step in their career.
The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic and forward-thinking teacher who is committed to fostering a love of languages and enabling pupils of all abilities to thrive.
Closing date: 2pm on Friday 5th June 2026
