The Head of English and Drama at Malvern College Tokyo plays a pivotal role in leading the English and Drama departments and ensuring high standards of teaching and learning across the school. This is a strategic leadership role with responsibility for shaping the vision and direction of English Language and Literature, English Language Acquisition, and the taught Drama and Theatre programmes, ensuring that pupils make outstanding progress whilst developing as confident readers, writers, communicators, critical thinkers, and creative individuals.
The Head of English and Drama will collaborate closely with other leaders across the College to ensure that teaching staff have the necessary support, curriculum, and resources to meet the diverse linguistic and cultural needs of pupils. The role requires particular collaboration with the Head of English as an Additional Language (EAL) to ensure a coherent and ambitious continuum of English language development for multilingual learners. Close partnership with colleagues in the Primary Years Programme is also essential to ensure outstanding progression in English from the earliest years through to Sixth Form.
Within Drama, the role provides strategic leadership for the taught curriculum, ensuring thoughtful curriculum design, clear progression, high-quality pedagogy, and robust quality assurance. Drama is viewed as an integral part of pupils' development as communicators, collaborators, performers, and creative thinkers. Responsibility for the College's wider performance and productions programme sits separately with the Director of Arts.
