John has over thirty year of experience teaching and leading in North Manchester secondary schools. Ten years were spent working at the North West Manchester City Learning Centre researching the effective use of new and emerging digital technologies and how these impact on teaching and learning. In April 2010 he joined the team at Manchester Communication Academy in Harpurhey, leading on the development of the new Computing curriculum, digital strategy and skills and staff effectiveness and performance in the use of technology. Since leaving teaching in the Spring of 2017 he has been working with online provider Tute Education Ltd, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Manchester City Council and The University of Salford on developing digital strategy, quality remote learning and digital skills. In March 2020 the DfE EdTech Demonstrator programme was reconfigured to focus on remote provision of learning during lockdown with an additional 20 demonstrators being appointed. John approached The Manchester College and together they were successful in securing a demonstrator contract to support eighty schools and colleges across the North West of England. Phase 2 of the programme saw John moving to work with Oldham Sixth Form College Research School helping schools apply digital technologies in the recovery phase driven by best practice research. In 2022 John worked with The States of Jersey in publishing a digital education strategy and five-year action plan for the island. This includes over thirty primary schools, secondary schools and special schools. John also works with several North West multi-academy trusts as computing SIP and developing specialist digital leaders. More recently John has been working with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority on delivering the MBacc Digital Agency pilots in ten schools across the region. John enjoys walking in The Forest of Bowland with his husband and dog Izzy frequenting the excellent gastro pubs of The Ribble Valley.
